Classfolk Privacy Policy
Last Updated: November 5, 2025
1. Our Commitment to Your Privacy
Welcome to Classfolk. We are building a platform to help homeschooling families plan, execute, and manage their educational journey. As founders and parents, this is a deeply personal topic for us, and protecting your family’s privacy is a responsibility we take very seriously.
This Privacy Policy explains in plain language:
- What information we collect from you.
- Why we collect it and how we use it.
- How we protect and store it.
- Your rights regarding your information.
This policy applies to all services offered by Classfolk (“we,” “us,” or “our”). By using our platform, you are agreeing to the terms of this policy.
Because our services involve children’s education, our policy is designed to comply with Canadian privacy laws, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and relevant Ontario privacy principles.
2. Our Policy on Children’s Information
Classfolk is a platform designed for parents and legal guardians to manage their children’s education. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 without the explicit, verifiable consent of a parent or guardian.
- Who provides data: Parents/guardians are responsible for creating accounts and inputting all information about their children (such as their name, age, and educational progress).
- Parental Consent: By creating an account and adding student information, you (the parent/guardian) provide your consent for us to collect and use your child’s information as described in this policy, for the sole purpose of providing the Classfolk service.
- Control: You have full control over your child’s profile and can review or delete it at any time.
3. Information We Collect
We only collect the information that is necessary to provide and improve our service.
- Information You Provide (Parent/Guardian):
- Account Information: Your name, email address, password, and location (province/state). We need this to create your account and provide you with location-specific compliance information.
- Billing Information: If you subscribe to a paid plan, our secure payment processor (e.g., Stripe) will collect your credit card information. We do not store this information on our servers.
- Information You Provide (Student):
- Student Profile: Your child’s first name, age, or grade level. This is used to create their learning profile.
- Educational Records: Any curriculum plans, lesson progress, grades, assignments, or “Notice of Intent” documents you create or upload. This is your data; we just store it so you can access and manage it.
- Information We Collect Automatically:
- Usage Data: When you use our platform, we may log technical information like your browser type, IP address, and which features you use. We collect this to understand how our service is performing, fix bugs, and improve the user experience.
- Cookies: We use minimal, necessary cookies to keep you logged in and to remember your preferences.
4. How We Use Your Information
Our main goal is to use your data to make your homeschooling journey easier, not to sell your data. We use your information for the following specific purposes:
- To Provide and Manage the Service:
- To set up and maintain your account.
- To allow you to build lesson plans, track progress, and manage educational records.
- To provide you with relevant compliance information for your jurisdiction.
- To Communicate With You:
- To send you important service-related updates (e.g., security notices, changes to our terms).
- To respond to your support requests.
- To send you optional newsletters or updates about new features (you can opt out of these at any time).
- To Improve Our Platform:
- To analyze anonymous usage data to understand which features are most valuable and where we can improve.
- To fix bugs and prevent security issues.
We will never, under any circumstances, sell your or your child’s personal information to third parties.
5. How We Share Information
We do not share your personal information except in the following limited circumstances:
- With Third-Party Service Providers: We use trusted partners to help us run Classfolk (e.g., cloud hosting providers like AWS or a database service). These partners are legally and contractually bound to protect your data and are only allowed to use it to perform the specific service we’ve hired them for.
- For Legal Reasons: We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to a valid legal request (like a subpoena or court order) from Canadian authorities.
- With Your Explicit Consent: We will not share your data with anyone else without your direct, informed permission.
6. Data Security and Retention
- Security: We take the security of your family’s data very seriously. We use industry-standard technical and administrative safeguards, such as data encryption (both in transit and at rest) and strict access controls, to protect your information from unauthorized access, loss, or theft. However, no system is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
- Retention: We will only keep your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with our services. If you delete your account, we will permanently delete your personal information in a secure manner within a reasonable timeframe, unless we are required by law to retain it for a longer period.
7. Your Rights and Control
Under Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA), you have rights over your personal information.
- Right to Access: You have the right to request a copy of the personal information we hold about you and your child.
- Right to Correction: If you find any inaccuracies in your information, you can correct it directly in your account settings or by contacting us.
- Right to Withdraw Consent (Account Deletion): You can withdraw your consent at any time by deleting your account. This will permanently remove your data from our systems as described in the “Retention” section.
You can exercise these rights by contacting our Privacy Officer at [Email Address, e.g., privacy@classfolk.com].
8. International Data Transfers
Our company is based in Ontario, Canada. However, our data may be stored and processed on secure servers located in Canada or the United States by our third-party service providers. When your data is in another country, it may be subject to the laws of that country. We take steps to ensure all our partners uphold privacy standards equivalent to those in Canada.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may need to update this policy from time to time as our platform evolves or as laws change. If we make a significant change, we will notify you by email or with an in-app notification before the change takes effect.
10. How to Contact Us
If you have any questions, concerns, or complaints about this policy or your privacy, please contact our designated Privacy Officer. We take all concerns seriously and will respond promptly.
